Cinematography
This specialist cinematography course is delivered over two years (four semesters), fulltime, leading to the award of the Advanced Diploma of Screen and Media. It is suited to those seeking a professional career in the film and television industries as a cinematographer/director of photography (students primarily interested in writing, producing or directing should apply for our other Advanced Diploma course).
The course is built on these five objectives:
- How to create emotion and continuity of visual mood
- How to advance story
- How to build and maintain rhythm
- How to enhance the trace of the eye (framing, moving the camera, creative lighting, focusing)
- How to bring the three dimensional world and space of action to the screen

During the course students will work as cinematographers on a number of major projects written, produced and directed by other students at IFSS. Cinematography specialists will also make their own projects, including: a documentary, a music video, a commercial, and a major project.
In addition to providing in-depth knowledge and skills in the use of cameras, lenses and lighting, the course emphasises the role of the cinematographer in pre-production and post-production. The technologies and processes required for data-wrangling, editing, compositing, grading and finishing are all covered in depth to ensure graduates are ready to work in today's digital cinema industry.
Application requirements:
In addition to completing the online application form, cinematography course applicants must supply a portfolio of their own work as follows:
a. 1 x Short film/video project: 3 to 7 minutes duration, in Quicktime H.264 format.
The film must have been directed or photographed by the applicant.
b. A portfolio of 12 still photographs in JPEG format. All photographs must be taken by the applicant (and any Photoshop or other processing work must also have been done by the applicant).
