Technological Philosophy

Our aim at IFSS is to make creative technology transparent. To educate filmmakers whose creative vision is never limited by a lack of technical knowledge. Filmmakers for whom the tools of cinema are an invisible and transparent conduit to creativity.

CINEMA IS UNIQUE

A film cannot be made or experienced without the apparatus of making or the medium of delivery; the Camera and the Screen. Cinema is Technology. The Craft of the filmmaker is the exploitation of Technology and the manipulation of the Medium. The Artistry of the filmmaker is Knowledge wielded to shape Meaning. Without technical knowledge a filmmaker is hamstrung, impotent, unable to fashion their creativity into tangible form.

CRAFT

We believe that the filmmaker should know the tools of their art as a sculptor knows their chisels and a painter their brushes. By embracing an holistic and comprehensive hands-on learning process there will be no part of filmmaking that is foreign to you; from acquisition of the image right through to delivering it to the viewer. From broad conceptual ideas to the fine detail of technical manipulation.

EMPOWERMENT

Your creative vision should never be hamstrung by your own technological limitations. At IFSS you will not be a ‘user’ who knows a few tricks of a brand name software package. Rather, you will be an empowered creator able to work across a multitude of software systems and make informed judgements about the right tool to serve your creative needs. You will be a filmmaker able to shape workflow processes that suit you, rather than shaping yourself to fit the process.

SELF SUFFICIENCY

The digital age brings unprecedented cinematic opportunities. At IFSS we focus on driving you to become a self-sufficient and empowered filmmaker; someone able to generate a project from scratch to fruition. Someone able to instigate a production rather than just contribute to one. By providing a platform of consummate exploration and understanding of technical processes of cinematic creation you’ll become a self-reliant, self-motivated, self-generating filmmaker of the digital age.

INTEGRATION

No element of film production exists in a bubble. Each component informs and contextualizes every other part. Cinema is forged at the seams where cinematography, editing, sound, light and performance intersect. Skill in any area of cinema production can only be built from knowledge of all areas of filmmaking. Our focus is on your engagement with an integrated approach to production knowledge; an understanding of how each part fits into the whole and how the each component influences the cinematic experience.

FUTURE FOCUSED

Your engagement with technology at IFSS is designed to empower you Not for what filmmaking has been, but for what filmmaking Can and Will be. Traditional filmmaking processes are segmented, hierarchical and linear but the digital ‘now’ and the digital ‘future’ is very different. Flexibility, efficiency, integration and parallel production are the paradigms of the digital age. Cinema is no longer just shoot/cut/screen and our courses will drive you to embrace the diversity of new possibilities that digital cinema delivers.
