A course designed to find and develop your own unique creative brilliance
What we offer
At IFSS you get more than just a piece of paper from your film course. All our students graduate with an Advanced Diploma in Screen, along with a killer portfolio to launch a successful career in the film industry.
IFSS is a Registered Training Organisation providing training and assessment services in filmmaking, registered with the New South Wales Government Vocational Education and Training Board (VETAB). The school awards the CUF60101 Advanced Diploma of Screen under the national CUF01 Film, TV, Radio and Multimedia Training Package.
The International Film School Advanced Diploma Program is a production intensive two-year course that ensures students will learn the fundamentals of film production before specialising in one of our key areas.
Students can undertake a program of study under the Writing, Directing and Producing course, which allows incremental specialisation towards a chosen area, or they can choose one of our groundbreaking new courses in Cinematography, Editing or Sound.
At IFSS, the Advanced Diploma of Screen is approached with greater complexity than that which is outlined in the basic CUF60101 course. The course is complemented through the insights of practicing filmmakers and film industry professionals. It is our mandate that students of the school receive the best possible training.

A universal approach to cinema (whether film or television)
We believe that if you want to be a successful writer, director or producer, you must first be trained in all these disciplines -- in order that you fully understand the implications of every action you take and creative choice you make.
You must understand each other's problems, powers and potential.
As a writer, you must understand the implications of every sentence you write, how it powerfully leverages elements of production philosophy, budget, schedule, performance, inspiration, story effect and character, and audience experience. How you feed and inspire every other creative department, and give rigour and foundation to their activities and contribution.
As a producer, you must understand how to bring the best out of your collaborators, how to support them, how to drive them to their best, how to resource them, how to give them reflective rigour, permission to succeed and excel. How to create a creative, nurturing, supportive environment. How to create a 'culture' and microcosm of productive 'society' around them...creative social mechanisms.
As a director, you need to know how to chose scripts, how to direct writers, how to guide development towards your vision and beyond it. How to support not limit colloborators with your vision. How to inspire, how to strengthen and envigorate the creative writing process. How to manage your own destiny -- how to 'produce' your career and drive your projects.
A course designed for innovation
Every imaginative outpouring needs to be freed from the familiar: to provide fresh new thrills or insights or questions. Each time we go to the movie theatre, we're begging to be blown away with a new way of thinking, feeling, looking or understanding.
Remember the first time you saw The Matrix, Donnie Darko, American Beauty, 400 Blows, Fight Club, Magnolia, The Ice Storm...
Incremental specialisation
Students begin their studieslearning all three disciplines, and then incrementally specialise towards the role (or roles) of their chosing over the two year periodof their studies.
Craft skills, technique and complex theory are taught through practicalexercises where you will feel the theory, sense the structures, where you will have your instincts named and trained. Designedto produce startling showreel quality works, shaped by a powerfullyengaging artistry and zeal. To move students beyond craft knowledge to insightful skill useand cinematic artistry, freeing liberating their skills to the heightsof being able to be capable of putting into shape any kind ofimaginative innovation. It's all to easy to teach the world's knowledge so far of how to shapea film, but to shape film as yet unseen and storytelling devices as yetuncreated, each student requires a level of understanding ABOVE craftknowledge, almost like a god looking down on such lowly techniques withinsights that go beyond formula and tried and tested technique.
You need to re-invent the rules of filmmaking and cinematicstorytelling with every new feature... even if only subtly to reveal newtruths about new emotional shapes and life realities or stories wehave not yet seen.Australia's leading filmmakers and teachers plucked from the best filmschools lead students beyond craft proficiency to forge distinctivebankable creative visions.
You won't just learn the usual film school stuff of how to crew a film, you will learn how to take up a key creative role of writer, director, producer or of one of the key department heads.Above all, you will learn how to construct cinema, a state of mind that is different to that created by a novel, theatre or bytelevision.
A state of mind and engagement that craves audio-visualverification to suspend it in a realm beyond now.A state of mind akin to a transporting magic. You know it when youfeel it. You've been there before. But how many film schools do youknow that teach it?
