THE DRAMA OF STORY is an inspiring, one-day trek in the company of one
of Australia’s most inspiring and knowledgeable screenwriting teachers,
Billy Marshall Stoneking .
This is seminar as odyssey… as journey of self-discovery. It aims to
illuminate and provoke interest in the efficacy of character-based
storytelling for the big and small screen, as well as other platforms
that wish to employ dramatic storytelling.
The one-day journey is conducted by way of a mentored exploration
and application of a broad range of storytelling perspectives, tools,
and strategies that enable participants to develop an enthusiasm for,
and a confidence in, their own intuitive grasp of the guiding
principles of mediumistic story telling.
The major aims of the one-day seminar are:
- To initiate participants into the world of character-based, tribally relevant dramatic storytelling.
- To
cultivate an appetite for fluency in the expression and realisation of
emotionally compelling characters and character actions
- To engender a useable awareness of the parallels between dramatic action and problem solving in every day life.
- To
make participants aware of the myriad applications dramatic
storytelling and its language has for dealing with a range of human
problems and disciplines, including the art of collaboration,
leadership and confidence issues, crisis management, role versatility,
and change.
- To facilitate experiences that are conducive to
exploring and developing each participant’s talents for operating
mediumistically.
- To refine one’s insights into the nature and role of creativity, in one’s own development and in one’s relationship with others.
By the end of the workshop, participants should be able to:
- Employ the grammar and language of dramatic storytelling to
create contrasting vantage points or perspectives from which to view
the problems and issues relevant to their work.
- Use story and storytelling as a means for improving communication between themselves and others.
- Creatively
explore and develop useful strategies for navigating obstacles arising
out of problems based upon hidden or unrealised assumptions within the
creative process.
- Apply the three primary relationships of dramatic storytelling to the illumination of issues arising from the work-in-progress.
