Anna Broinowski 

Directing and Documentary

AnnaMugShot.jpg Anna is an Australian Film Institute award winning director and NIDA acting graduate who has been making films since 1995.

Her documentaries include FORBIDDEN LIE$, HELEN’S WAR, SEXING THE LABEL and HELL BENTO!!, all of which have won numerous awards in Australia and overseas, including the 2007 Rome Film Fest ‘Cult’ Prize, the Al Jazeera International Film Festival ‘Golden Award’, the San Francisco International Film Festival Golden Gate Special Jury prize, 3 Australian Film Institute Awards, 2 Australian Film Critics’ Awards, the 2008 NSW Premier’s Literary award, and Best Director at Films Des Femmes in France. Prior to filmmaking Anna was a playwright and actress, winning the 1996 Arts NSW Writer’s Fellowship for her play THE GAP.

Following the successful theatrical release of FORBIDDEN LIE$, for which she is currently nominated for a Writer’s Guild of America (West) Screenplay Award, Anna is now developing a slate of drama and documentary feature films.

Stephen Davis 

Screenwriting and Drama

Born in Glasgow, Stephen was inspired to write by his grandfather Alfred, who penned poems about his false teeth.  Moving to Australia, Stephen penned his first play, A VERY BLACK COMEDY INDEED, when he was fifteen and it was published by Queensland's Playlab Press iStephenMugShot.jpgn 1989. Since then BLURRED, JUICE and BURNT have also been published.

Stephen acted for a bit doing Ibsen and Chekhov for the State Theatre Company and STREET FIGHTER for Warner Brothers. It was then he realized he wasn’t very good. So he returned to writing.

Three of Stephen's Feature Film scripts have been produced CITY LOOP aka BORED OLIVES (1999) BLURRED (nominated for an AFI for best adapted screenplay 2002) and MONKEY PUZZLE ( (2006). Stephen has written for live action and animated television. His credits included PIRATE ISLANDS, HIGH FLIERS, CRASH PALACE, FAIRY TALE POLICE DEPARTMENT, BLINKY BILL, HOOTA AND SNOOZ and  PIXEL PINKIE. In 2001 Stephen worked in Los Angeles for Fox television developing a pilot for a children’s series called AQUABATS.

In 2002/2003 Stephen was the full time in-house writer for April Films developing and doctoring his little heart out.  In 2005, Stephen branched into writing/directing and worked with Gus Van Sant and John Sayles at AURORA with his screenplay LEFTOVERS. They were very nice.

Billy Marshall Stoneking

Screenwriting and Drama


Billy has been called "one of the most powerful voices in Australian literature". (24 Hours)  His numerous film, television, theatre and writing credits in addition to his script consultancy work with writers, directors and production companies, have contributed to his reputation as one of the most inspiring and knowledgeable teachers of character-based, dramatic screen storytelling in the world, and his expertise BillyMugShot.jpgand insights into character and story are in constant demand from industry professionals in film, television, and theatre.  Hs is the producer of a number of ground-breaking films, including a 50-minute documentary biography of Aboriginal elder, NOSEPEG TJUPURRULA (directed by Lindsay Frazer, written by Billy Marshall Stoneking), and the highly eccentric, 30-minute drama, JELLY'S PLACENTA (written and directed by Christina Conrad), which had its world debut at the Budapest International Short Film Festival in August 2007.

His writing credits – both fictional and factional - reflect a breadth of experience and interests that are evidenced by a number of film, television, theatre and radio projects, including his award-winning ABC-TV "dramedy" series, STRINGER (creator/writer), and Paramount Television’s highly commercial MISSION : IMPOSSIBLE series (series writer), He has also written extensively for the stage and in 2006, following successful seasons in London, New York, Dublin, Washington, New Zealand, and elsewhere, his full-length play, SIXTEEN WORDS FOR WATER, attracted critical and popular acclaim and attention with its first Melbourne production at the Carlton Courthouse Theatre.

Other script editing and script consultancy credits include Darlene Johnson’s SBSI/AFC-funded drama, CROCODILE DREAMING, Andrew Dominic's feature, CHOPPER; and Peter Templeman's Oscar-nominated short, THE SAVIOUR. Stoneking also consulted on and script edited Maya Newell's first film, the 50-minute documentary, RICHARD, which had its premiere at Director's Fortnight, Cannes, in 2007.

Dean Francis 

Directing

Dean Francis graduated with a Master of Arts in Directing from the Australian Film Television and Radio School where he won the Best Directed Drama prize for his action short AFTERLIFE. Dean has directed fifteen short films which have had over a hundred film festival screenings and wDeanMugShot.jpgon numerous awards.

Prior to attending AFTRS Dean attained an Advanced Diploma in Cinematography from the Institute of Lens Arts Australia, worked as a field producer for ABC Television and has appeared as an actor on television drama series’. In 2001, Dean co-directed, co-wrote, produced and edited the short feature CRAZY RICHARD  which was released in the US by Ariztical Entertainment. Also included on the DVD release were episodes of the adult sitcom I CAN’T EVEN THINK STRAIGHT! which Dean wrote, directed and produced.

Dean wrote and directed his AFTRS graduating film VERMIN which premiered at the prestigious Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, was nominated for an Australian Directors Guild Award and won two prizes at the Sydney Underground Film Festival. Dean was one of two Australian directors chosen to take part in the Berlin Film Festival’s Talent Campus where he was mentored by filmmakers such as Michel Gondry and Chris Doyle.

Currently, Dean is pre-production on the his first feature film, the supernatural thriller ROAD TRAIN, produced by Michael Robertson (Black Water). Dean’s development slate includes Babi (funded by Film Victoria) and the sci-fi thriller Rifting with Mark Victor (Poltergeist). 

 

Dr Greg Dolgopolov

Cinema studies and production

Greg teaches and researches in video production, film and television theory. His talents lie in fusing theoretical interrogations with creative media practice. Greg has worked across a range of media fields, has taught screen studies at AFTRS and media and cultural studies at Murdoch, Melbourne and Curtin Universities as well as lecturer in film at the University of NSW. His professional experience also includes work as a ‘spin doctor’ and a Ringmaster with the Moscow Lilliputian Circus.

Shing Fung Cheung

Cinematographer

Fung moved to from Hong Kong to Australia in 1986. 

He completed Bachelor of the Arts course in Film and Television at Queensland College of Arts, and also completed Master of Arts in Cinematography at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School (AFTRS).  His graduating short drama film “Danya” was the first prize winner of the Kodak Filmschool World Competition for the Asia-Pacific Region, and had showcased at Cannes Film Festival 2006. 

He also received various Gold and Silver prizes at the Australian Cinematographers Society (ACS) Awards, including an Award of Distinction for the National ACS Awards for the film “Insecurities”.  He is now working as a freelance cinematographer, in Television Commercials, Music Videos and Feature Films.     
 

George Whaley 

Directing and Acting for Screen

George Whaley is a Director, Actor, Writer and Teacher for screen and stage. Formerly the Head of Acting at the National Institute of Dramatic Art and Head of Teaching at the Australian Film Television and Radio School, his former students include some of Australia's best-known actors and screen directors.

He has worked at Australia's leading theatre companies alongside some of the industry's most awarded actors including; Leo Mackern and Geoffrey Rush. His screen productions, as writer and director include features, telemovies. corporates and mini series.

George teaches at the International Film School Sydney, the Western Australian Academy of Preforming Arts and the Northern Rivers Conservatorium Arts Centre.

Annie Breslin 

Sound Designer

Annie Breslin has 25 years experience working as a Sound Designer/Editor in the Australian Film and Television Industry. Credits include Mad Max 2, Evil Angels, High Tide, Young Einstein, The Well, Soft Fruit, Passion, Unfolding Florence, and  Unfinished Sky.

She has also recently enjoyed the challenges of Theatre sound design, contributing to two plays for The Sydney Theatre Company, Influence and Democracy and an independent productions 4.48 Psychosis at the Stables Theatre.

Annie was Head of Sound at the Australian Film Television and Radio School from 1995 to 2001 where she co-wrote and introduced the Graduate Certificate in Screen Composition.

In 2002 Annie was the recipient of a Centenary Medal for services to the Australian Community and the Australian Film Industry 

 

 

Judd Overton

Cinematographer

Judd Overton,  has shot three features since he graduated from the Australian Film Television and Radio School in 2004. He recently shot the Chaplin-JuddMug.jpgstyled black and white silent comedy ‘Dr Plonk’ for acclaimed Australian director Rolf de Heer – it premiered at the Adelaide Film Festival, and screened in competition at Toronto and Rome International Film Festivals.
 
Overton shoots award winning drama, short films, music clips and commercial spots. He has won several Australian Cinematographers Society (ACS) awards including a Silver ACS Award for the hand cranked ‘Dr Plonk’.
 
His skills include a diverse knowledge of professional equipment, specializing in 35mm and 16mm film, High Definition and Digital Cinema formats, time and resource management and creative, efficient lighting.
