Mike Jones
Head of Technological Arts

Mike brings to IFSS a broad spectrum of experience both practical and theoretical. Mike's production background spans both on-set and post-production, through to motion graphics, 3D, animation, live-events, on-line media as well as photography and radio. Spanning fiction, documentary and news media forms, Mike has served as cinematographer, editor, sound designer and technical director both in Australia and overseas and now runs a small production entity called ‘BadDad’ with collaborator Greg Dolgopolov which is focused on hybrid documentary and cinema theory put into practice.
As a film industry journalist and writer Mike has penned more than 250 published essays, articles and reviews covering all aspects of cinema technology, production process and film critique. He is the author of three books including Viewfinder: an introduction to movies and visual media in the digital
age, is a syndicated columnist for DigitalMediaNet and senior writer for AusCam magazine and regular contributor to Metro and ScreenEducation film jorunals.
Passionate about new technologies, Mike is involved in software development and beta testing of creative production tools for both pre and post-production. As a technology journalist he has used, abused and reviewed every creative software tool on the market and brings a broadly informed perspective to understanding the digital production process and the diversity of tools and systems that make digital cinema possible.
Mike holds a Bachelor's degree in Creative Arts, a Masters degree in New Media and is currently deep in the trenches of a PhD examining the aesthetics of digital cinema. His writing and research on new approaches to film production, computer gaming, surround sound and motion graphics, have seen him lecture in Europe and the US as well as institutions throughout Australia and New Zealand.
